It is easy to agree that we don’t want dandelions…..getting to the roots is incredibly hard work and the collective privilege of whiteness has allowed us to believe that we don’t actually have to do that work. Please keep using your platform to push us to acknowledge that and get to doing the hard work.

Racism is part and parcel of this country. The USA was founded on racism and owes its wealth to racism. It is so ingrained that we see only the tip. To simply consider oneself to not be a racist is not enough. One must be antiracist as written about by Ibram X. Kendi.
Regarding the killing of the dog and the Black child. Another way of looking at the killings is not in equating the value of two lives; the wonton murder of the child is in a class of its own. Rather to understand the similarity that both were innocent, deeply loved beings. What was destroyed by these abhorrent killings, in both cases, were very pure types of love.
Both killing have deeply shared roots in our society in our patriarchy's Christian Biblical hierarchy that provides artificial values to lives based on meaningless attributes such as skin color, sex, sexuality, species, religion, etc.
The photograph breaks my heart. He should be alive to celebrate another birthday. We are allowing dehumanization in our names. We are allowing murder in our names. We have a segregationist government Woodrow Wilson would be proud of. And I don't know how we get out of this mess.
Slavery existed for over two centuries in America. People like you made the same cynical, defeatist claims. Those people quit fighting. Those people were wrong.
